But now, landfills and old businesses have hazardous, toxic and contaminated properties that need to be remediated or treated. Sevenson Environmental Services is a company that mainly works behind the scenes but is hired by large companies to help decontaminate water and soil. There is a great deal of business to be had in the decontamination business, and sometimes it takes decades to clean up a contaminated area. "Business opportunities are steady in both the public and private sector," says Sevenson Environmental Services CEO, Michael Elia.
Urban Growers (Growing Produce on Rooftops)
Did you know using "green roofs" will also help the surrounding environment? Urban growers take to rooftops, green houses or roof gardens to grow their fresh produce. Customers demand eco-friendly and locally grown produce for their foods; luckily, for urban growers, there doesn't seem to be a decline in this demand. Growing produce on rooftops helps deliver locally grown foods in a pro-environment way by minimizing the use of pesticides, fossil fuels and other resources needed to grow and transport food from larger commercial farms to markets and restaurants, according to National Geographic.
Environmental Engineer
According to CNN Money, environmental engineer was a top ten best job for fast growth. With a salary range of $78,000-$113,00 you will be able to live comfortably and a little more environmentally savvy. Environmental engineers are responsible for applying their knowledge of biology, chemistry and other natural sciences to help battle problems like pollution, waste management and recycling. With businesses quick to adjust their companies to conform to the water and air regulations, this job is highly sought after.
Clean Car Engineers
Not shocking is the need for eco-friendly and clean automobiles. First came the hybrid vehicle (a vehicle that uses an internal combustion engine as well as an electric motor), which minimized the need for gasoline since the vehicle could run both on fuel and an electric motor. Now, engineers have sought work to make a completely electric car. As seen on National Geographic, engineers are working on an electric car prototype in California, which will be an exciting alternative to fuel and hybrid cars. The hope is to be able to have a sustaining car that uses alternative powers like wind and solar instead of using dirty fuels like coal.
Solar Cell Technicians
According to the European Commission, the production of solar cells and photovoltaic systems has doubled every two years during the past decade! With that data, it's safe to say that this is a very solid and eco-friendly job. This job can be daunting though, since you have to wear protective clothing and eyewear to keep yourself from becoming a premature tomato (just kidding, but really, this can be dangerous stuff, like looking straight into the sun).
Environmental Engineering Technician
Working along side, or sometimes working for, environmental engineers, these technicians carry out tasks based on what the engineer needs. In most cases, you will work around pollution management and prevention as well as field work and monitoring. In 2010, the median annual salary was over $43,000.
